Module 3: Toxoplasmosis Risk
Toxoplas-what-now?
Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection that can be transmitted through contact with cat poo, contaminated soil, undercooked meat, or unwashed produce. While typically mild in healthy adults, toxoplasmosis during pregnancy can pose serious risks to the developing baby. Pregnant Sims with cats or who work on farms need to be extra cautious!
How It Works
Your pregnant Sim’s risk of contracting toxoplasmosis increases through:
- Spending time around filthy cats
- Cleaning cat litter boxes
- Eating raw, undercooked or cured meat or fish
- Eating spoiled foods
- Touching or caring for farm animals
Reducing Infection Risk:
- Hire help and/or ask household members or family to help with cat litter cleaning and taking care of farm animals
- Wash hands with disinfectant soap after contact with high-risk animals
- Avoiding eating raw meat and fish food.
- Avoiding touching pet cat when they are filthy
Toxoplasmosis Infection
Infection Progression
- If infected, symptoms will progressively worsen over 1-2 in-game days if left untreated
- The pregnant Sim will experience increasingly negative effects and without treatment, the infection can have serious consequences
Disclosure to Loved Ones
Your Sim can disclose their diagnosis to loved ones (but be prepared for concern or scolding!)
Treatment of Toxoplasmosis:
- Order a two-step course of anti-parasitic medicine from the ‘order’ menu on the computer. The second dose of the medicine must be taken within 6 hours of the first dose, if not the treatment will need to be started from the beginning.
- Important: The full treatment must be completed before labor begins otherwise it will be too late to prevent newborn becoming infected.
Optional Extra - Congenital toxoplasmosis
If Module 7 is installed AND the infection is left untreated or treatment isn’t completed before labor, there is a high chance that the baby will be born with congenital toxoplasmosis.
When a baby is born with congenital toxoplasmosis, they will require medical care and treatment through regular paediatrician appointments
- See Module 7 page for details on newborn complications
