Module 2: Caffeine Consumption
Overview
This module simulates the risks of excessive caffeine consumption during pregnancy. High caffeine intake during pregnancy can cross the placenta and affect the developing baby, as their body cannot process caffeine as efficiently as adults. Pregnant Sims who drink too much coffee, tea, or energy drinks will experience negative side effects that can affect both themselves and their developing baby.
Caffeine Tracking & Effects
- Caffeine consumption is tracked throughout pregnancy whereby excessive caffeine intake causes negative buffs and mood effects
- The effect caffeine has on pregnant sims increases as pregnancy progresses due to caffeine retention increasing with each trimester
Pregnancy Insomnia
At high caffeine levels, you may receive a notification that your pregnant Sim has developed pregnancy insomnia, which causes:
- Increased difficulty falling asleep – Your Sim will struggle to drift off at bedtime
- Significantly reduced energy levels – Your Sim’s energy drains faster and recovers slower
- Restless fetus interrupting sleep – Your Sim may wake up in the middle of the night due to the baby giving “karate kicks” in the womb
Significant Other Demands – When your pregnant Sim wakes up from these night time disruptions, they can demand their partner wake up and keep them company. Whether their partner actually listens and gets out of bed is a whole other story.
Managing Pregnancy Insomnia
Your Sim can find relief through the following methods
Hydration & Lifestyle Changes
- Drink Water – Helps flush caffeine from the system and promotes better sleep
- Stop Drinking Caffeine! – This will only make symptoms worse
Relaxation Techniques
- Count Llamas Interaction – A calming bedtime routine to help your Sim fall asleep
- Relaxing Aromatherapy Bath Before Bed – Soothes tension and prepares the body for rest
- Pregnancy Relief Massage via Pregnancy Massage Table
Education & Skills
- Prenatal Sleep Workshops – Use the Travel option via the phone to travel to a Prenatal Sleep Workshop and learn evidence-based tips for improving sleep quality during pregnancy
Physical Activity
- Safe Exercises (Requires Module 5: Prenatal Exertion) – Appropriate physical activity can improve sleep quality
Medical Intervention
- Sleep Medication (Requires adeepindigo’s Healthcare Redux mod) – Medication option for persistent insomnia
