Where to Find Safe and Reliable Sims 4 Mods
Creator Websites
Many mod creators have their own websites with detailed mod descriptions, installation instructions, changelogs, and compatibility info. Downloading from these sites is the safest and most reliable, as you get files directly from the creator.
The main challenge is finding the creator’s site in the first place. Once you do, bookmarking lets you easily access the latest mod versions without relying on third parties.
Patreon
Patreon is popular among Sims 4 modders, offering free mods and optional paid early access to new releases. You can browse Patreon for a wide variety of mods.
The nice thing about Patreon is that creators tend to keep their pages well organised with pinned posts, download links, and update logs. It’s also easy to follow your favourite creators, so you get notified when they release new content. If you search “Sims 4 mods” on Patreon, you’ll find hundreds of creators, from big names to newer modders just getting started.
Creator Discord Servers
Many mod creators run Discord servers for regular updates, support, and download links. Joining keeps you informed in real time when mods are released or updated after a patch.
Discord servers are also great for asking questions before you download something. You can usually see other players discussing the mod, reporting bugs, and sharing how they use it in their own games. That kind of community feedback is really valuable when deciding whether a mod is worth installing.
Reddit communities
Reddit is also helpful if you want recommendations, updates, or help finding the original creator of a mod.
Helpful communities include:
- r/Sims4 for general Sims 4 discussion and player recommendations
- r/thesims for broader Sims community discussion
- r/TheSims4Mods for mod and custom content sharing
These spaces are best used for discovery and discussion rather than as your final trust signal. A good habit is to use Reddit to find the creator’s name, then download from the creator’s official site or verified page. It is also a good sign that these communities have rules around creator credit and piracy.
Curated Mod Lists
If you don’t want to search through lots of different sites, curated mod lists are a great shortcut. These lists are made by community members who have already done the research and gathered recommended mods in one place.
One I’d personally recommend is Scarlet’s Realm Mod List (SFW Only Edition). It’s a well-maintained list that covers a wide range of gameplay mods, and its regular updates mean you won’t end up downloading something that hasn’t been updated in 3 years.
Itch.io
Itch.io is mainly known as a platform for indie games, but a growing number of Sims 4 modders use it to host their downloads. It’s a clean, straightforward platform where creators can offer mods for free or set a “name your price” option. There’s no clutter, no misleading download buttons, and the pages are simple and easy to navigate.
It’s not the first place most people think of for Sims 4 content, but that’s exactly why it’s worth a look. You’ll find creators on Itch.io who you might not come across anywhere else.
The Sims Resource
The Sims Resource is a long-standing Sims platform known especially for its custom content. It allows browsing millions of Sims 4 downloads, with organised previews of CAS, build/buy items, and creator pages.
Sims 4 YouTube creators
There are many creators who share mod recommendations, gameplay showcases, tip videos, and tutorial videos.
This is especially helpful for beginners, as you can see how a mod works, check if it’s up to date, and decide if it suits your gameplay.
A simple rule to follow
A good rule of thumb is this:
- Find mods through creator websites, Patreon, Discord communities, Reddit, and YouTube
- Download mods from the creator’s official page or official download link
- Check for updates after every Sims 4 patch
